Costa Rica! Days 1 and 2

Clark flew out to Costa Rica for work on Sunday, October 16th. He flew out with his c0-worker, Milan. Milan's wife, Rachel, and I flew out to join the men on Thursday, October 20th. Our flight from Miami to San Jose, Costa Rica, ended up being much longer than planned. Just as we were descending for the airport in San Jose, our airplane was diverted to Managua, Nicaragua because of bad weather conditions. We stayed in the airplane in Managua for about 2 1/2 hours, until the weather cleared up enough to try landing in San Jose again. Thankfully, we were able to land. Instead of landing at 3:30 in San Jose, our plane didn't land until 7:45 p.m. It made for a very long day of travel, we had been traveling since we arrived at the Denver airport that morning at 6:30 a.m. Whew. Poor Clark and Milan were waiting at the San Jose airport for 3 hours. And they had no idea when we would arrive. And there are no chairs to wait at the airport. They had to wait outside on the sidewalk, by the taxis.
After we finally met up with the menfolk, we drove by the San Jose Temple. It is really small. I wish we would have had time to go inside.

The next morning we hit the road and drove about 4 hours north (but it should have only been a little more than 3...) to the Arenal Volcano. The roads were a little scary driving through the mountains. The Costa Ricans have no problem with passing on a double yellow line, around a blind curve, on a tiny road that barely fits two lanes. It was pretty crazy at times. Clark was the designated chauffeur for the trip, and he did an amazing job navigating the streets. However, the GPS sent us on a wild goose chase. We ended up completely circling our hotel, and taking a muddy road through the jungle. We finally reached a river that you were supposed to cross by driving across a scary looking mound of dirt. That was when we decided it was time to turn around. We re-entered the hotel information into our GPS, and this time around it took us to the right place.

Pretty much all the bridges were one lane. This one was definitely the longest one lane bridge (and the most secure looking, during our drive we went on quite a few rickety bridges)

And this was the point where we decided to turn around. GPS was not our friend that day.

And we finally arrived at our hotel, and it was beautiful! We had our own private cabin, and this beautiful garden right outside our sliding door/wall of windows
Here we are sitting on our front porch. Arenal is right behind us, but you can't see it because of the clouds and rain. I loved relaxing on our rocking chairs on the porch. It was great.

And, we had a pretty cool plant in our bathroom.

That night we went to the hotel restaurant for dinner. That ended up being a bit of a disappointment. First of all, dinner took 3 hours from start to finish. Secondly, our dinner was supposed to be included in the package that we purchased from the hotel. Unfortunately, our server, Elmer ("like Elmer Fudd") really did not understand this concept. He ended up chasing us down out the door to make us pay for our food. At the end of our stay, the hotel had to refund us the money for the dinner, because it really was included in the package we bought. However, the front desk didn't even know that when we first talked to them. We had to show them on the hotel's website where it said that dinner would be included in our package price.

Zoo day

I took the kiddos to the zoo today. Corbin was super excited. We haven't been in over a year, and I think this was probably his favorite time so far. He was more interested in seeing the animals this time around, and not just running around from place to place, like he did on previous trips.

Playing in the new play area at the zoo.

transportation

Last week we took the kiddos to a transportation thingy. Corbin loved it. They let the kids climb in all the trucks, honk the horn, and pretend to steer.

The garbage truck had a really loud horn!

Corbin quotes

Staci: "Me, too."
Corbin: "Me, four."
Corbin: "Mom, your not two. You're 87!"
(Corbin will often say, "me, four" after Clark and I say, "me, too" I've tried to explain that "me, too" means, "me, also" but he doesn't quite get it yet. And he is pretty proud of the fact that he is four years old.)

Corbin is really into garbage and recycling. A while ago he learned about the recycling symbol (you know, the triangle of arrows). Well, on plastic products there is a number in the middle of the triangle, depending on what kind of plastic it is. Corbin insists that the number indicates how many times the item can be recycled. For example, Corbin will look at the milk carton and exclaim, "This can be recycled two times!! Isn't that amazing?!"

I took this picture yesterday, on the way to preschool. Corbin really wanted to bring his roller-backpack. And he decided that he wanted to roll the bag behind his bike, rather than wear it on his back (because it does have straps, and can be worn on the back, not just rolled on the ground). He's a pretty funny kid.

11 months

At 11 months:
* Avery loves to push and ride on the push cars.
* Avery also loves to push the kitchen chairs around the kitchen.
* She wants to play with any toy that Corbin is playing with.
* Still fits in her 6-9 month clothes.
* She is becoming a better eater, but she has not yet figured out how to drink with a straw or out of a sippy cup.
* Loves stairs
* Avery likes to sit in baskets.

* She will crawl over to me, to sit on my lap. I love it.

Cute kiddos

Corbin had a hard time falling asleep last night. He came out of his room many, many times. And this is where Clark and I found him when we went up for bed.

And Avery is getting stronger every day. I can't believe how big she is getting.

Rockies game

Last Friday our little family had the chance to go to a Rockies game. We got to go to the box, with one of Clark's new clients. I haven't been to a Rockies game in 4 years (2 weeks before Corbin was born, to be more exact). I had forgotten how much I enjoy going to baseball games! The Rockies got creamed by the Giants. But, we had so much fun, anyways. I was a little worried that Corbin would get antsy and bored. However, he proved me wrong and he loved it! Corbin kept saying, "hey, batter, batter." And he was quite the hilarious dancer for all the songs. And Avery took a nice little nap on the way to the game, so she was very pleasant and happy. After the game we went down onto the field for the fireworks show. The grand finale was really impressive!

Hike in Vail

On our way to Torrey, UT, we decided to stop in Vail for a little hike. Avery did really well. It was her first time in the hiking backpack. Corbin loved being the hiking leader. He collected pine cones and rocks along the trail until his pockets were completely full. We saw a lot of butterflies along the trail, which was a fun surprise.
